Near Continuous Data Protection

Data protection has had a fairly traditional approach with the focus on protecting customer data and offering the ability to restore the same. One of the issues considering todays requirements is about the RPO (which used to be 24 hours or more) and the RTO as well as the need for OS and application specialist to be involved in the actual recovery process. The storage engineer would RESTORE, it was up to the dba to recover.

When Near CDP solutions hit the market, all this changed. Initially targeted at the virtual environments these solutions soon moved to address physical servers too.

Key advantages are easy recovery from an administrator’s point of view, in very short time (low RTO met) as well as ability to recover to a fairly recent point in time (RPO met). These solutions seek to recover not just data but the OS as well as the application itself, hence perfect for environments which do not have multiple IT personnel.
